More than a hundred years ago, the Lumiere brothers held the first public film screening, including the well-known 'Arrival of a Train' and 'Baby's Breakfast', a forty-second clip of Auguste Lumiere feeding his baby daughter. The film captures not just a meal, but a moment of family intimacy. Since then, countless films have been made about food, with numerous lists easily found online. Among these excellent works, food is not just about chewing and digestion; it is more than a source of nutrition. It connects to emotions, culture, history, identity, and a sense of belonging, bringing people together and evoking feelings and memories. If we were to turn this diverse film menu into an actual menu, the light and delightful 'Kamome Diner' would be an ideal appetizer, bringing strangers together over delicious, light meals in the land of Moomin. 'Delicious Proposal' is another heartwarming short film about two strangers who begin to communicate through a mistaken lunch delivery. 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' is a story that happens before dinner, tackling serious issues with a light-hearted and humorous tone. 'The Hundred-Foot Journey' is also an appetizing short film, recounting a son's childhood memories and the origins of his desire to cook.
For the main course, 'Barbie's Feast' and 'The Feast' are perfect choices, depicting people cooking grand feasts of their hometowns while in a foreign land, treating delicious food as a blessing. 'Julie & Julia' and 'A Tale of Cooking and Fragrant Mountains' explore deeper themes through cookbooks. The former connects two eras and sparks a conversation between women of different generations, while the latter links six historical events by following the stories of chefs and soldiers responsible for military catering, revealing the changing times through the kitchen. 'The Secret Sauce' also delves into history, traveling back to the American frontier era and portraying the culinary dreams of two men.
For dessert, 'Dandelion' offers a delightful blend of black humor and satire that is rich yet not overwhelming, sweet yet not cloying. 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown' can be seen as a black comedy, veering towards the absurd and blending dining with love and hatred. 'The God of Cookery' not only meets the requirements of a Lunar New Year comedy but also combines the dining theme with martial arts and chivalry elements. While 'The Night of the Restless Restaurant' is not a comedy, its one-shot take and smooth rhythm make it a delightful after-dinner treat, leaving a lasting impression.
Today's special feature is 'Chef Cheung', starring Chu Pak Hong. Through the theme of cooking, it serves up a cross-cultural romance against the backdrop of Finland's beautiful lakes and mountains.
Additional information:
'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown' and 'Dandelion' are rated Category III and strictly for adults only.
